Help fixing up your home

Programs to help with lead paint removal

Lead paint is dangerous to young children, and it is sometimes present in houses and apartments built before 1979. If a child chews on lead paint – which may be found on windowsills, floorboards, built-in cabinets, and other painted surfaces – he or she may develop serious health problems.

The Housing Commission offers two programs to help with lead paint removal – one for those who are participating in the Commission’s Housing Rehabilitation Program and one for the general public living in older communities:

Grants for Low-Income Families

Lead paint removal grants are available citywide for both rental and owner-occupied properties built before 1979 and occupied by low-income families with children under six years of age, either residing or frequently visiting.

The maximum grant is $15,000 for a single-family residence and $7,500 per multifamily unit plus $10,000 for common areas.  For more information, call 619.578.7521.

Loans for Families Participating in Commission’s Housing Rehabilitation Program

If you have a Housing Commission loan to help you fix up your home, you may also qualify for lead paint removal assistance if you have lead paint in your home. For more information, call 619.578.7521.
