Home of Your Own

Program Launch

Why rent when you can be your own landlord?

The San Diego Housing Commission is offering a new program to help those who are receiving rental assistance vouchers to realize the dream of home ownership.

The “Home of Your Own” program allows Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program participants to apply their housing assistance payments toward a mortgage loan.

Typical households who qualify are entitled to mortgage payment assistance for up to 15 years.  However, elderly and disabled persons who qualify may receive benefits indefinitely for as long as they remain eligible. All participants will be subject to annual recertification. That means you’ll have to verify each year that you still meet the program’s requirements, including your income and  other terms of your Notice of Rights and Responsibilities with the Housing Commission.

The Housing Commission will begin accepting applications Oct. 1, 2009.

Please click here for a self-guided series of questions to determine if you meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

Please note that the minimum income requirement is $50,000 per year for those who are neither elderly nor disabled and $40,000 per year for elderly and/or disabled families and Family Self-sufficiency/ASPIRE families or recent graduates.

If the website questionnaire indicates you are eligible, you’ll be able to download an application and supporting documents. The application form must be filled out completely and submitted to the Housing Choice Voucher home ownership assistant.

Housing Commission staff will contact you via the mail after your application has been reviewed. Incomplete application packages will not be accepted. Applications for families that do not meet all minimum requirements will be denied.
